Halloween Horror Flash Fiction

The Halloween Horror Flash Fiction Student Contest is the flagship program of Walpurgis Words for Literacy. Each fall, high school students across the country are invited to submit original flash fiction — short, sharp horror stories that prove young voices can haunt just as effectively as the masters. Entries open in September, and winners are announced on Halloween night, because some stories are best told in the dark.

Here's how the contest works:

  • Eligibility is open to all high school students (grades 9–12) nationwide
  • Submissions are limited to flash fiction of 1,000 words or fewer in the horror or dark fantasy genre
  • Judging is conducted by published authors from The Dark Veil Society
  • Prizes include cash awards, certificates, and public recogninition on social media and websites
  • Winner announcement takes place on Halloween night via our website and social media

Your donations fund the prizes, the judging process, and the outreach efforts that put this contest in front of students who might not otherwise have a platform for their work. Help us give young horror writers the recognition they deserve.
